SJTU Vice President Chen Gang met with the delegation of American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) headed by Todd Grove, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of the ABS on October 11, 2011, Minhang Campus. Yang Jianmin, Dean of the School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering (NAOCE), and professors concerned were present at the meeting.
Chen Gang extended a warm welcome to the foreign guests. He pointed out that SJTU is one of the time-honored universities in China and that NAOCE is the largest of its kind in the world. It also maintains a close cooperative relationship with Texas A&M University, University of Michigan and Massachusetts Institute of Technology as well as some of the world's prestigious shipping bureaus, the ABS included. Many excellent SJTU graduates are working at ABS, which also sets a solid foundation for the bilateral cooperation. Grove expressed his thanks to Chen for the reception. He said that ABS also keeps partnership with the above-mentioned universities and hoped to learn about the scientific research and teaching in shipping and ocean engineering at SJTU for the sake of further collaboration. The ABS delegation also visited the laboratory of NAOCE.

Apart from its headquarters in USA, the ABS has set up regional headquarters in London, Dubai, Singapore and offices in over 70 countries. Its services cover many areas including shipping, ocean engineering, petrochemical industry as well as ISO certification.
