President Zhang Jie attended the Presidents Summit at the University of Hong Kong on the occasion of its centenary anniversary December 18.
Leaders from 14 universities on the Chinese mainland including Tsinghua University, Peking University and Zhejiang University and over 60 international universities gathered to the summit of "East Meets West" in the context of higher education globally.
It included breakout discussions on "Synergy, Competition and Collaboration", "Internationalization", "Mass Education vs. Elite Education", "Public Funding vs. Private Funding" and current challenges in higher education from different international perspectives.
Yan Liangyu, Assistant to the President, and Ma Lei, Director of the Development Office, accompanied President Zhang during his visit.
President Zhang Jie was moderator for the panel discussion in the morning. He made a keynote speech on the internationalization of higher education in the afternoon. With the internationalization strategy of SJTU as the main thread, he reviewed the development of SJTU's internationalization, elaborated on concept innovation and strategic planning and introduced SJTU's multimodal and multilayered ways of joint education and achievements. He welcomed prestigious higher education institutions from around the world to establish a close partnership with SJTU for mutual benefit and common progress.
During his stay in Hong Kong, President Zhang Jie met with Academician Joseph Jao-Yiu Sung, Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and some SJTU alumni and friends from other communities. He expressed gratitude on behalf of the university for all the support and help that SJTU has received.
