Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Cameron Visited SJTU
On the afternoon of November 3, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Cameron visited SJTU and communicated with teachers and students on Xuhui Campus. Present at the meeting were Chinese Ambassador to Britain Liu Xiaoming, Deputy Director-General of the Department of European Affairs of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Hu Zhaoming, Deputy Director of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government Fu Jihong, British Ambassador to China Sebastian Wood, Consul General of the UK in Shanghai Brian Davidson, SJTU Chairperson Ma Dexiu, SJTU President Zhang Jie, Vice Presidents Zhu Jian and , as well as hundreds of SJTU students and teachers. The meeting was hosted by President Zhang Jie.
On the meeting, Cameron highly appreciated the speed of China's development. He paid great attention on the function of university as well as cultural communication. Cameron encouraged young students to break the barriers brought by different history, different countries and different cultures to enhance communication and integration. He also shared with students the challenges in his life of Prime Minister, e.g. Britain's budget deficit, the formation of a coalition government, the Eurozone economic issues, etc.
Speaking of how the two countries are to deepen the cooperation and communication, Cameron emphasized that the differences between China and Britain in terms of their culture, history and tradition would not prevent deeper cooperation between the two sides.
.Ma Dexiu and Zhang Jie presented Cameron a piece of traditional Chinese painting created by SJTU teacher Zhan Renzuo and a special table tennis racket signed by Chief Coach of Chinese national table tennis team Liu Guoliang, London Olympic ping-pong champions and SJTU students.
