The Premier’s Delegation from New South Wales Visited SJTU

On the afternoon of November 7, Mike Baird, new Premier of New South Wales, Australia, as well as the Cabinet of New South Wales and Vice President of the University of New South Wales(UNSW) visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University(SJTU). Zhang Jie, President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and leaders from SJTU Advanced Industrial Technology Research Institute, Office of Research ManagementDepartment of PhysicsSchool of Materials Science and Engineering, Office of International Cooperation and Exchange received the guests in Minhang campus.

Zhang Jie introduced to guests the long history and research strength of Shanghai Jiao Tong University as well as its contribution to economic and social development. Zhang Jie pointed out that SJTU and the University of New South Wales have a very similar disciplinary structure so that the two schools are the perfect partner. Baird expressed his support for cooperation between Shanghai Jiaotong University and the University of New South Wales and he hoped the two schools can strive for greater breakthrough in cooperation.

Zhang Jie and Baird jointly listened to progress report of cooperation between the two universities delivered by Department of Physics, Advanced Industrial Technology Research Institute and Office of Research Management. Mike Baird announced the list of winners of the second phase of the project of SJTU - UNSW joint research fund. Mike Baird and Zhang Jie inaugurated SJTU - UNSW joint innovation center together.

SJTU and UNSW research cooperation agreement was signed in 2013. Two schools each invested $ 200,000 to support eight two-year projects. This year, the two schools signed a research fund project agreement, under which, the University of New South Wales will provide a $ 350,000 development fund within the next two years and Shanghai Jiaotong University will also provide the same amount of funds for cooperation to support ongoing research as well as projects in new areas of mutual interest.
