SJTU Celebrates its 120th Anniversary
On April 8th, 2016, on the commemoration meeting of the 120th anniversary of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), thousands of alumni gathered merrily in Minhang campus of SJTU, talking about the university's history, present and future. Yang Xiong, the Deputy Secretary of Shanghai Municipal Committee and Mayer of Shanghai, and Du Zhanyuan, the Vice Minister of Education, attended the meeting and delivered speeches.
Jiang Sixian, the Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of Shanghai Municipal People's Congress and Party Secretary of SJTU, presided over the meeting. Other guests attending the meeting included Wong Tiehui, the Vice Mayor of Shanghai, Lin Jianhua, the President of Peking University, Qiu Yong, the President of Tsinghua University, Wu Zhaohui, the President of Zhejiang University, Wei Xiaopeng, the Party Secretary of Fu Dan University, Chen Jun, the President of Nanjing University, Wan Lijun, the President of University of Science and Technology of China, Shen Zuyao, the President of Hongkong Chinese University, and Li Jiajun, the President of Tianjin University. Zhang Jie, the President of SJTU made a keynote speech. Those who attended also included delegates from China 9 League (C9), Russell Group, League of European Research Universities (LERU) and Group of Eight (Go8). Gathering in the picturesque campus, they celebrated the 120th anniversary of SJTU together from the main session and over 100 parallel sessions.
Jiang Zemin, an alumnus graduating in 1947, the core of the third generation of CPC's collective leadership, sent a congratulatory letter to his alma mater, and expressed his congratulations and greetings to all the teachers, students and the staff of SJTU, as well as the alumni at home and abroad.
On behalf of Shanghai Municipal and government, Yang Xiong extended warm welcome to SJTU alumni and staffs home and abroad.
On behalf of the Ministry of Education, Du Zhanyuan also delivered a speech expressing his congratulations.
Zhang Jie made a keynote speech on "Memorizing the roots, looking into the future, uniting with each other and achieving harmony".
Qiu Yong, on behalf of Tsinghua University and other high education institutions, extended his congratulations.
David Greenaway, the chairman of Russell Group, delivered a speech on behalf of overseas universities, where he said, the 120-year-old SJTU was still young as a university, and would still constantly probe and progress in the future.
92-year-old Huang Xuhua, delivered a speech illustrating his interpretation of SJTU spirits on behalf of the alumni. As an alumnus graduating from Department of Shipbuilding in 1949, he was the father of nuclear submarine and a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
"SJTU, SJTU, is majestic, competing and united. We pursue the truth to advance; we overcome difficulties to succeed. My fellow schoolmates! My fellow schoolmates! Rejuvenate our country! Rejuvenate our country! We have aspirations in our mind, and responsibilities on our shoulders......" The commemoration meeting ended in the inspiring and melodious school song, which marked the new innovative journey towards excellency that the old and young university embarked on.
