SJTU Held 125th Anniversary

On April 10th, the 125th anniversary of SJTU was held at the Fok Ying Tung Sports Center, Minhang Campus. Representatives of alumni at home and abroad, school managers, directors of the university’s Education Development Foundation, representatives of distinguished alumni awards winners, faculty and medical staff representatives with outstanding achievements in teaching, scientific research and cultural promotion, social elites who donated to the university, all school leaders, former leaders, heads of affiliated hospitals and schools, administrative departments, schools and departments of SJTU and other affiliated units, as well as teachers, students and medical staff representatives, joined together to celebrate the birthday of SJTU.
The ceremony officially began in the sound of the solemn national anthem.
Lin Zhongqin, SJTU President and CAE academician, gave a keynote speech. He said that in recent years, with the care and support of people from all walks of life and alumni from all over the world, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has made great breakthroughs in its development. It has remained its leading position among top universities in China and is gradually marching towards the goal of becoming one of the top 100 universities in the world. The achievements and effectiveness of talent training were encouraging and have continued to deepen, the quality of the faculty has been steadily improved, the contribution in scientific research and innovation has become increasingly eminent, the running of open education has produced a marked effect, the reputation at home and abroad has become more prominent, and the success news of alumni from all areas has kept pouring in. Looking forward in the new era, Shanghai Jiao Tong University will continue to work hard towards the goal of building a world-class university and create greater glories.
Academician Chen Zhu, alumnus and vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the 13th National People's Congress, sent a video to express his warm congratulations on the birthday of SJTU and sincere greetings to all teachers and students, medical staff, and alumni at home and abroad. Chen Zhu sincerely hopes that SJTU will take the 125th birthday as a new starting point, seize the opportunity, build on the momentum, and scale new heights, so as to make greater contributions to the development of the country, the happiness of the people, and the progress of human civilization.
During the event, the 2021 distinguished alumni awards ceremony was grandly held.
Although Huang Xuhua, 1949 alumnus of the Department of Shipbuilding and the recipient of the 2020 Distinguished Alumni Life Achievement Award, was not able to attend the ceremony in person, he sent a message to his alma mater via video, expressing his hope that Shanghai Jiao Tong University would take a step forward and make greater progress.
Gu Songfen, 1951 alumnus of the Department of Aeronautical Engineering and an expert in aircraft design, received the 2021 Distinguished Alumni Life Achievement Award, the highest honor awarded by the university to its alumni. Although Gu was not present at the ceremony, he recorded a special video message for his alma mater, hoping that Shanghai Jiao Tong University will carry forward its past tradition and make greater contributions to the development of China in the future.
Yang Yuanqing, 1986 alumnus of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Chairman and CEO of Lenovo Group, and the recipient of the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Siyuan Contribution Memorial Award, made a speech. He said that Shanghai Jiao Tong University was the place where his dream began and where he embarked on his career in computer science and IT. After graduation, as an alumnus of SJTU, he has always paid attention to and supported the development of his alma mater, and has never forgotten the school motto of “when you drink water, never shall you forget its source; love your motherland and bring honor to your alma mater”.

Zeng Yi, a 2020 graduate student from the School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering, spoke on behalf of all the students. He said that in SJTU, learning is the ladder to growth and progress. The new generation of Shanghai Jiao Tong University students will pass on the SJTU spirit well-preserved over the past three centuries, study hard, research hard and strive hard, and aspire to write new chapters of SJTU stories on the vast lands of China.
Yang Zhenbin, Secretary of the CPC SJTU Committee, delivered a speech. He pointed out that this year marks not only the 125th anniversary of the founding of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, but also the 100th anniversary of “Jiao Tong University” receiving this name. Facing the future, all SJTUers should have confidence in the bright future, but at the same time maintain the hard work and unremitting efforts. Shanghai Jiao Tong University will insist on advancing with the times, and develop in a more innovative, more dynamic and more synergistic way. Focusing on a people-oriented approach, it will comprehensively improve the ability of talent training, and cultivate generations after generations of excellent students for the society.
The ceremony came to an end in the lively school song. Shanghai Jiao Tong University, together with all the teachers, students and alumni, will set out for an even prouder future.
