Dean of the School of Medicine

Biography
Professor Guoqiang CHEN is the vice president of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and chancellor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. As a scientist, he is also running Key Laboratory of Cell Differentiation and Apoptosis of Ministry of Education and Division of Cancer Functional Genomics of Shanghai Institute of Health Science, Shanghai Institutes of Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Professor Chen got his PhD in Hematology from Shanghai Second Medical University (Currently Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine) in 1996. He worked as the visiting scholar in Institute of Hematology, Saint-Louis Hospital, Paris in 1997 and visiting assistant professor in the Dept. of Medicine, Mount-Sinai Medical Center, New York during 1999-2001. He returned to China in 2001 and was appointed as the director of Dept. Pathophysiology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, where he and his colleagues made great contribution on the basic research of leukemia.
Professor Chen has been devoting his efforts to investigate cellular and molecular mechanisms of leukemogenesis, leukemic cell differentiation and apoptosis, functional genomics of cancer, proteomics with the identification of drug targets to induce leukemic cell differentiation. In the past 15 years, he made important contribution to put arsenic trioxide into worldwide-used effective drug for the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), a unique subtype of acute myeloid leukemia. He also found the role of hypoxia/hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1a)/C/EBPa and Runx1 signaling axis as well as phospholipid scramblase 1 in leukemic cell differentiation. More recently, he also identifies some natural anti-tumor/leukemia compounds and developed natural compounds-based chemical proteomic investigations on protein modification, leukemia including leukemic stem cells. With these discoveries, Professor Chen has published over 90 peer-reviewing articles on the international journals such as BLOOD, JNCI, JBC, ONCOGENE, LEUKEMIA, PNAS, CANCER RES, and these papers has been cited for over 4000 times. In July 2007, he was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and was promoted to Chancellor in October 2010. Later, Professor Chen was appointed as the Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in December 2010.
Professor Chen is also the associate chief editor of Chinese Journal of Cancer, Acta Physiologica Sinica, International J Pathology and Clinical Medicine, editor of Chinese Journal of Cancer Biotherapy, Chinese Journal of Cancer Prevention and Treatment, besides he is the reviewer of Blood, Cancer Res, Leukemia, JBC, Oncogene, Cell Death and Differentiation, Biochemical pharmacol, Apoptosis, Oncology, BioTechnique, International J Cancer, Hematologica, and others. Besides, Professor Chen is very active in attending various kinds of associations. He is the member of American Society of Hematology, American Society of Molecular Biology & Biochemistry, American Society of Chemistry. He is chairman of Shanghai Society of Physiology, vice chairman of Shanghai Society of Biochemstry and Molecular Biology, member of the standing committee for Chinese Association of pathophysiology and Chinese Association of Biochemstry and Molecular Biology.
Due to his great contribution on the basic research, Professor Chen was awarded National Nature Science Reward Grade Two (2010, 2007), National Medicine and Technology Reward Grade One (2005), Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award Grade One (2005), Science and Technology Progress Awards of Shanghai Grade One (2005), Thousands of Talents of China in the New Century (2004), Chinese Youth Science and Technology Prize (2004), and so on.
